BREAKING NEWS: ASUU 5months old Stike has been called Off

After five months and 10 days that the public
universities have been shut due to the strike by
the Academic Staff of Union of Universities, the
Federal Government and the universities
lecturers on Wednesday finally resolved to sign
the 2013 Agreement.
This is the review of the FGN-ASUU 2012
Memorandum of Understanding reached on the
2009 Agreement.
Both parties, however, refused to give details of
the agreement to journalists who witnessed the
signing of the agreement.
The meeting was almost aborted by the union
but for the prompt intervention of some
stakeholders.
ASUU had on Tuesday vowed not to attend the
meeting because there was no commitment and
proper invitation from the government.
The union had demanded the proof of payment
of the N200bn universities infrastructure fund,
non-victimisation clause, review of the
Agreement in 2014 and that a representative of
government, preferably the Attorney-General of
the Federation sign the agreement as conditions
to call-off the strike which began on July 1.
It was gathered that the union got three of its
demands while it relinquished one to the
government.

10 years old abuse.

An Egor Magistrates’ Court, Benin, on Friday  sentenced a 62-year old pastor, Alfred Idonogie, to two years imprisonment for defiling a 10-year old girl.
Chief Magistrate Taye Omoruyi found Idonogie guilty of the offence after the prosecutor presented five witnesses who testified in proof of the charge.
The prosecution witnesses included the victim’s grandmother, the girl, the investigating police officer and a medical doctor, who established that there was penetration into the little girl’s  private part.
The court said that the accused committed the offence on June 25, 2 013 at  Onaghino Street, medical stores road, Benin City.
The judge said the convict would spend six months in jail if he agreed to pay a fine of N200,000
Counsel to the accused, Mr U. Osa-Uwagie, indicated his interest to contest the judgment on appeal.
The Coordinator, Edo State Child Protection Network, Jennifer Ero, who took up the matter, said the judgment was a victory for the child.
She urged the public to be committed in the fight against child abuse. (NAN)

Accidents

The Federal Roads Safety Commission, Kano State
Command, said seven persons died in an auto crash
on Bagadawa-Mil Tara- Katsina road on February
13.

The FRSC Sector Commander in Kano, Mr Garba
Ibrahim, told the News Agency of Nigeria on
Friday that the accident occurred at about
7.30p.m., adding that nine persons were also
injured in the crash.

He said the accident involved three vehicles,
including an articulated vehicle with Reg. No. KTN
628AA and two Toyota buses with Reg. No.
AA106KKH and GNN26AA.

Ibrahim said the accident involved 26 people while
the remains of the dead and those injured were
taken to the hospital.

He said the FRSC personnel responded promptly to a
distress call by a Good Samaritan immediately
after the accident and advised drivers to be careful
when they drive.

Open letter

I write this open letter from the bottom of my heart to the president and commander-in-chief of the armed forces of the federal republic of nigeria, dr. Goodluck  jonathan, to ensure that the incessant but avoidable strikes of 2013 do not spill over to 2014. The reasons being that strike of any sort dwindles the economy and retard development. If not asuu today, it is asup, coesu, nlc, or nma tomorrow. For the sake of good governance, equity, justice and fair play, the president should use his good offices to put to a stop  to strikes in the country.

Auto Crash on Ondo-Akure Road: NUJ chair, wife, daughter killed

FOUR persons – a  couple, their daughter and house help-yesterday, died in a miltiple accident involving the convoy of  Ondo State deputy governor, Alhaji Ali Olanusi.
A  traditional ruler, the Osunmakinde of Ife Tuntun, Osun State, Oba Obawure Taofeek Olaposi, who was seriously injured in the crash, is on admission in Ondo State Specialist  Hospital,  Akure.
The deceased are the Chairman of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) chapel  of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, NUJ, Alex Akinwale, his wife, Rebecca, and daughter, Pauline.
The Akinwales first  child, Paul, who was also involved in the crash, however, survived.
The wife was  a staff in the Marketing Department of the NTA,  Akure.
However the deputy governor escaped death.
Eyewitness account revealed that the  crash occurred at  Apomu-Owena along Akure –Ondo Road when  a white Toyota Camry car belonging to the monarch  ran into Olanusi’s  convoy among other vehicles while trying to overtake.
Sunday Vanguard learnt that the driver of the Camry dangerously overtook the  vehicles and, in the process, rammed into  on-coming vehicles including  those  in  the deputy governor’s convoy resulting in the multiple accident.
The NTA couple were coming from Ondo town after attending a burial ceremony.
It was gathered  that the Camry rammed into the couple’s car before hitting the deputy governor’s convoy.
The monarch and a teenager  in his vehicle are  receiving treatment at the Akure specialist hospital.
The corpses of the deceased were said to have also been deposited at the hospital mortuary.
The Chief Press Secretary to the deputy governor, Mr Daisi Ajayi, said his principal was on his way to Ondo for an official assignment when the incident occurred.
Ajayi said  one of the security cars in Olanusi’s  convoy was  badly damaged as a result of the incident.
Meanwhile, it was  wailing at the premises of the NTA,  Akure following the death of the couple.
Immediately the news of the death of the Akinwales  spread, workers trooped to the television station  located at Oba-Ile to confirm  it.

Uganda president believes gays Are sick

KAMPALA (AFP) – Ugandan President Yoweri
Museveni views gays as “sick” but doesnot believe
they should be jailed or executed and will block a
push by parliament to impose tough penalties, his
spokesman said Friday.

“He does notapprove of homosexuality but he
believesthatthese people have a right to exist,”
presidential spokesman Tamale Mirudi told AFP.

“The president says that these people are sick, you
cannot kill a sick person. A person that has been
found guilty of homosexual practicescannot be
imprisoned for life.”

The spokesman confirmed a report in the
independent DailyMonitor newspaper that
Museveni had refused to approve a controversial
bill passed by parliament last month that would
have seen homosexualsjailed for life.

He also insisted that the president wasnot backing
down in the face of widespread international
condemnation of the bill.

“What the President hasbeing sayingis that we
shall not persecute these homosexuals and
lesbians. That is the point. That is the message.
Maybe society can resent them but theycannot be
persecuted because of their problem,”Mirudi said.

“It wasnot because of a lobby. Nobody has
influenced the president. The president’s position
has been the same for a long time, nothing has
changed,” he added.

“The president has repeatedly said that we always
have been having homosexualsin Africa and they
never have been persecuted. But we shall not allow
them to marryin public, to organise a
demonstration in Kampala,”the spokesman said.
